In my 20s … and on my jounrey

Posted Thursday, February 26th, 2009. Filed Under Voices of youth | 2 Comments

This letter was sent to me from a young woman that I met while taking my Reiki levels I & II. She is an amazing woman who has already been through so much growth and awareness.

I find the youth today are much more aware of their life and world around them. They are looking from within in order to create the life they want rather than being told this is the way it is.

This woman has embarked on a journey that took her to an Island in South Korea. I am following her journey so that she can share with you her own experiences. As it has been a couple of months I will ask her for an update.

Here is her letter to me Nov/08.
——-
Journey To South Korea

I am writing this article from my classroom on Jeju Island, South Korea. It seems like I have been here longer than three months, perhaps, this is because so much has happened during this time.
Travelling to South Korea was not my first option, however, a student loan was the driving force behind my decision. My life before Korea was interesting, I graduated from University in July, 2007,and then travelled to Namibia, Africa, to visit my sister for a few months. When I arrived home from this journey, I decided to sleep on my mother’s couch for a short while until I would travel to S. Korea in January. However, this did not happen. I was going through major changes and this made feel too vulnerable to begin a new adventure in a foreign country. My mother is the one who encouraged me to stay in Toronto to see a counsellor in order to release some of the stuff that I was carrying deep inside. I accepted my mother’s wisdom and stayed an extra nine months. During this time, I was working different jobs, earning just enough to support my eating habits and leisure activities. I had decided that because of my privileged situation of not having to pay rent in a big city, I would just live simply. This is exactly what I did. During this time, I focused on building a strong foundation and connection with myself, with the guidance of an amazing therapist, that continues to sustain me while I am here in Korea. During this time I was given a very unique space where I could reveal my true being so I held this space as very sacred in my heart. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to follow my true interests in natural health and healing by taking a Reiki course. This course was amazing, it allowed me to connect with the Reiki energy and meet two very unique women, my teacher and fellow(ess) student, Sandra. Meeting these two women reminded me of how much I love this field and how it is possible to dedicate your life to a passionate creation and make it happen, successfully, in Toronto! I was in awe of how they spoke so openly and confidently about their journeys as I have been feeling the same way for a long time, but always have kept this information close to my heart and am very selective with whom I share .
The date of departure crept up very quickly and I needed to commit to the experience or decline. This was a stressful time because I was in a state of fluctuation; however, I received numerous signs from people and myself that it was the right time to go, so I booked by ticket two days before I left, for a year long commitment!
Now I am here, and It has been almost four months! My journey has just begun, and I know for sure that I am where I am supposed to be and am happy to be here. Aside from the exterior situation, all remains the same within, yet, I am in a great place to continue to come into my own and give thanks for this opportunity. In my next article I invite you to read about the magic of this Island and the opportunities, challenges and experiences that I have encountered up to this point. Blessings from a young woman on Jeju Island, South Korea.

What Does Baby Steps Mean?

Posted Thursday, February 26th, 2009. Filed Under Voices of wisdom | Leave a Comment

I have decided to touch on this topic following a conversation with a mother from school. She called me for my site name and then proceeded to “visit” it and read through the information. When I ran into her at school, I asked her what she thought and she said that she really liked it and it all “sounds” good but she is really busy. She has read many books and knows all of this — she starts to implement changes and within days or even weeks she stops and reverts back.

I look at her and say … “it’s all about baby steps”. She smiles for I am saying the exact thing she is thinking.

First to change a habit takes time. Some argue that you can do it in 21 days and others say more like 30 days. Whatever the time frame is, it is incremental and it starts with making the decision to make a change in one area of your life.

With some of my clients and friends it has been as simple as telling them to smile at 5 strangers over a week and see how you feel. Or waking up in the morning, taking a deep breathe in and counting to 3, holding your breathe and then breathing out. It can be so small, yet have a lasting effect for the day. If you do this each day it will eventually become a habit.

For others baby steps can mean writing in a journal every day or starting a work out regime. Whatever it is that you choose to do the most important thing for me is how it makes you feel. If you do something (while it may seem awkward or different at first) and it makes you feel good, then this is your heart and gut telling you that you are on the right track. If you implement a change and it makes you feel bad or not right or not good then I say tweak it or just let it go and find a different way to make the change.

For me I am also very busy … I have two young children, I am starting my Energy business, body energy work and Reiki, and promoting this site — which has already evolved to include a finance section. I have many friends, and see and speak to my family all the time. I can relate when someone says they are busy. What is more difficult to relate to for me is doing nothing for I know from nothing comes nothing. If I can empower you enough to just take that first baby step then you will know that you CAN DO IT. I want to alleviate any fears you may be holding. There is no judgment either way — the choice is up to you and even if I just plant a seed then I am happy.

I love to explain this using the metaphor of a penny doubling every day; how small changes can lead to the more transformational changes in your life, both internally and externally. In this day and age you cannot buy anything with a penny. I have heard that they may get rid of the penny altogether, this is how small and “insignificant” the penny is to some. For me it is different, for I know the compounding effect that a penny can have is astounding. If I said to you, “what do you want a million dollars or a penny that doubles every day for 31 days, which will you choose?” Most people will say I want the million dollars upfront. I know differently .. here’s why. Let’s look at this incrementally. On the first day you have 1 penny, on the 15th day you have 16,384 pennies ($163.84). On the 20th day you have 524,288 pennies ($5,242.88). Look what has happened in 20 days. Imagine what will happen in 11 more days … you will end up with $10,737,417.00! Now that is the power of compounding — it can be money or energy, it is still the same effect.

Taking that first step is just the beginning to whatever you want to change and create in your life. Start in one area as I said and then choose another one. I encourage you to start with yourself — loving and honouring yourself. If you choose to start somewhere else that is ok too, I do suggest that you at least do one thing to makes you feel good from within – smile at yourself in the mirror, say “I love you” to yourself, even give yourself a “self-hug”. To do this cross your arms in front of you and place your hands under your armpits and have your thumbs come out and facing up. No one knows what you are doing and it something that you can do at any time, any place.

I ask that you just begin — take that baby step.

Last week I provided a list of blog sites that I feel will empower and make a difference in your journey. Go to these different sites and pass them onto your friends. Some of these sites have been instrumental to me in my journey of baby steps to change.

Go for it and enjoy the journey.

All my best,

Sandra

I have done something a little different today. Rather than sharing my words I searched the internet for women and stories that I feel will empower, inspire and make a difference in your journey of awareness. I know that many of these sites have given me great insight into my own life, both internal and external and as this is a sharing site I want to share this with you. Enjoy.

I have broken them into topics to make this easier. I encourage you to “pay it forward” and share this with your friends, family members and all those that you know will benefit from it.

All my best!

What’s My Responsibility in Changing the World?

Posted Friday, February 20th, 2009. Filed Under Voices of youth | Leave a Comment

This is a call to the youth to say that YES you do have a responsibility and accountability to help bring about the changes you “talk” about with your friends.  Many of you have aligned with Barack Obama and what he stands for. He has a VERY strong message to all that We are part of the change.

Stop talking and start “walking your talk.”  If you want something to change it begins with you.  We are here to listen to your voices, suggestions, ideas, experiences, and more.  This means that if you want to see a cleaner and greener world then make sure you don’t litter, use re-usable bags when shopping, buy what you need and don’t waste, turn off light when you leave a room and most of all LEAD BY EXAMPLE. Show your parents that you are concerned about this world and that YOU are willing to take on this responsibility.

It’s where a dog, a cat and a rat come together!

Give me your comments at Sandra@2bempowered.com on how this can relate to our world?

See below for what this site it about:

I have started this blog site called the VOICE OF YOUTH as I believe that with guidance and mentoring it is the children who will bring about the changes we want to see in this world: from the smallest of changed to the largest.
ENVIRONMENT, INFRASTRUCTURE, ENDING POVERTY, CHANGES IN ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND POLITICAL ARENAS and so much more.
This is a site created to EMPOWER you, through which to hear your voice. We want to hear about your views, knowledge, experiences, and awareness on a wide range of topics. Many of you will also have an opportunity to post your blogs on this site. You can send your messages to Sandra@2bempowered.com. For identification, you only need to provide your FIRST NAME, AGE and COUNTRY. That’s it!
From this information I will gather and put together programs and initiatives. And I ask you to be the co-creators of the change you want to see in the world. You will be an important part of this process. As the future leaders of our world, it is time for you to break free of any barriers, unite, collaborate, share what you know and come together – holding hands and making a difference.
Pass this around to all of your friends!

CHOOSE TO STAY PRESENT AND BE IN THE MOMENT

I have turned to a number of women in my life and asked them to share some of their own wisdom that has made a difference in their life. Last week I talked about LIFE IS ABOUT CHOICES. When we begin to love and honour ourselves we begin to change from within affecting our external world/relationships. I find that learning to be present and in the moment allow me to truly enjoy that moment or to focus on what I need to do. Even with all the work I knew I had today, I chose to spend the day with my children on a school trip and when I was with them, 100% of my focus was on them and their smiles and laughter.

Please see a blog written by a dear friend, Mary Montanari:

There seems to be so much change going on these days. People are feeling confused and do not know who to trust. But this is all part of the Divine plan. We are in the process of a very powerful ascension and there is no turning back, we have been planning for this for thousands of years and the time has arrived. The old ways of things are changing and it is for the good of all.
These feelings of fear and anger are about to move through us and will be replaced with love and forgiveness.
The best part is that you do not have to do a thing just stay present. Yes that is the answer. For it is by staying present that nothing can be lost, forgotten or misunderstood. For many individuals this may be a very difficuilt task. The average person has been trained to over think and analyzes everything from very early on in their lives. Not too mention worrying about yesterday and tomorrow.

Now I want you to sit back and remember all the times you worried about something and then ask yourself what happened. Did the problem get resolved? Did all the worrying really help or did it seem like it took away some of your energy?

Back in the 1800’s, the Masters channeled Dr. Usui and he was able to create this wonderful prayer:

Just for today…I will not get angry
Just for today…I will not worry
Just for today…I will earn a living honestly and decently
Just for today…I will be grateful
Just for today…I will show love and respect for every form of life

Now take the challenge and try waking up one day and live this lifestyle.
It may be challenging at first but one thing is for sure you will start to pay a lot more attention to your actions and words. Hence you will become aware and present. Just being aware of what is happening right in front of you will enable you to understand and even cherish that moment. It could be as simple as driving your car. You may notice things like trees, hear birds sing and smell fresh baked bread. All your senses become heightened. These items, which one may have experienced before, but are now more aware of. It is during these moments when you are connected to the Universe. One may even receive an answer to a difficult problem they have been trying so hard to solve. You may even start to feel a strange feeling. Something you may have not felt before in this lifetime …..an inner peace. Now is that not worth trying?

The present is truly that. A present from God. Yesterday has passed. Tomorrow has not arrived. But today is our present. I really believe in this and work each day as if it were my last. This way, I enjoy it and express it. I also give thanks to God at the end of each day and forgive myself before I sleep. This way I awake with another new day head of me.

So then, is the world going crazy right now? Yes. Is there something we can do?
Yes. Just take the challenge and make a difference. It is not so much about world peace first but rather personal peace. The rest just flows.
