As I sat in disbelief….

I was finishing up my workshop on Empowerment Tools that can be used and brought into every day life when the young woman next to me turned to her friend and said, “hey, what can you see me doing with the rest of my life?”. She then said, if she cannot find a job she will go back to school for nursing and if she cannot find a job in Toronto, Canada she will consider going to the US.
I wanted to reach over and just grab her — HOW DARE YOU GIVE AWAY THE GREATEST GIFT WE HAVE – FREE WILL TO CHOOSE – TO BE WHO WE WANT. Talk about giving away your power.
This is YOUR life and YOU NEED TO FIND WHAT FEELS RIGHT FOR YOU. You can be the main participant in your life or an observor. Which one do you choose??
Some food for thought.
All my best,
Sandra
Disappointment – Part of Learning
Posted Thursday, November 19th, 2009. Filed Under Voices of youth | Leave a Comment
I was “empowering” a young man who wanted to apply for a fellowship with a world renowned company. They were accepting 1700 applications and only 100 will be interviewed and from that 100 only 10 will receive an offer for a position.
The odds are pretty tough so how do you shine? I worked with him on the 7 or 8 questions that they provided and it was the day before the application was due. The cutoff time was Tues. Nov. 17th, 2pm London, England time so 9am EST as there is a 5 hour time difference.
I called him to see how it went and received a call back from a very disappointed sounding young man – he made a MISTAKE and had it in his mind that he had until 8pm EST on that Tuesday forgetting that Europe is ahead of us. He missed the cutoff.
I told him definitely go get a drink and use a few choice words to describe his anger, disappointment and frustration at himself and the situation. Honour it and then LET IT GO. I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason. I told him that all his hard work has not gone to waste — keep his answers for he is applying to Business Schools shortly and some of these answers will be relevant. Also, it has given him an opportunity to fine tune his thoughts, expand and make them shine. It is a great exercise nontheless. It also taught him about being prepared and not waiting until the last minute!
I know it is hard to swallow however in life you will have disappointment and you will need to deal with it – honour it and then let it go. What you may not realize is how something today OR NOT that has happened will be used later in life. Every step along this journey will lead you to something new. I also told him that at this time he is not meant to do this fellowship.
Yes hard to swallow, however it is what it is.
All my best,
Sandra
Thinking of Grad School – Be Clear On Your Intention
Posted Thursday, November 12th, 2009. Filed Under Voices of youth | Leave a Comment
I HAD A GREAT TALK with a man who bought the company that leads the graduate study courses for GMAT, LSAT, etc. We were talking about why you will choose one school to attend over another.
We both agreed that you need to clearly determine what is your intention of attending a grad program at a certain school. If you want to attend Harvard is it because you want to immerse yourself with an elite social group – for building those connections OR do you want to attend a school for a certain program that inspires you?
Whatever it is – be clear. Just know one thing your success is not determined by the school you attend RATHER BY WHO YOU ARE, THE KNOWING AND BELIEF THAT YOU HAVE IN YOURSELF AND THE UNIVERSE.
Good luck making your choice.

Michael Jackson, “This is It”

I just came from the Michael Jackson tribute movie. He is such an inspiration to so many people. I encourage you to see his movie and to see how muc love he carried.
He is a man that wanted to make a difference and he did so through his work. One song stuck out for me, Man In The Mirror — our world is a reflection of where we are as a collectiv group. We need to begin showing more love for ourself and others.
All my best,

When Your Father Won’t Walk On Broken Glass … Show Him The Way

Great Story Shared By…
I just got off the phone wtih Garth Sandiford and he asked me a question, “If you had no choice will you walk across broken glass?” I said if I had to yes.
He told me he was with his son and they were at an motivational event and they were faced with this task of walking across broken glass. Garth hesitated for very human reasons: bloody feet and fear YET his son went ahead of him in line and when his turn came just crossed – no hesitation.
As our future leaders, it begins today, and you can do just as this boy did, do not hesitate, do not let fear stop you … walk on the “broken glass” and remind us to go for it – challenge our belief systems.
It can mean stepping ahead of your parents, society and walking your talk- just do it!

Sandra
Peace Tree Spirit – 4th Annual Mini Conference

In York Region, which I live, there are 1 million people speaking 60 languages. Can you imagine? How can we learn to live together in peace and tolerance and love?
The York Regional Police and York Region School Board came together with the intiative of bringing schools together. This is the fourth year and it started with 6 schools (or something like that) and today there were 37 schools.
The intention of the Peace Tree Spirit mini-conference is to share ideas, learn new ways of how to bring peace to our homes, schools and community.
The kids watched a movie written and directed by Mitra Sen called The Peace Tree. It is about two little girls, one Muslim and one Christian, both dream of celebrating each other’s festivals Christmas and Eid. But when they share their dreams, they are met with resistance from their parents who express their concerns. Through their struggles, they create a unique symbol – The Peace Tree, a tree that highlights the symbols from all our cultures and faiths to reflect the beauty of ‘diversity in unity’.
You as the youth talk about PEACE now let’s see you live it.
How can you be a Peace Tree Ambassador to your community?
All my best,
Sandra
I Learned So Much from My 20+ Year Old Friend

WHAT CAN I SAY…
I know that I have much wisdom to offer. Today it was my turn to receive wisdom from Simon, the young man, who is helping me with my social network side of my business.
I learned about tweet deck. I learned how to re-tweet. I learned how to directly respond. I have to say I am a good student.
You have so much to offer. As I told my son today, “it is not the destination that is so important, rather it is the journey along the way”. Don’t be in a rush and enjoy the ride. Stay open to the possibilities of learning and teaching. There is a place for both.
You Rock!!
All my best,
Sandra
The Need For Mentors
Posted Thursday, October 8th, 2009. Filed Under Voices of youth | 2 Comments
WHAT IS A MENTOR
To me a mentor is someone who will guide you, teach you, inspire you and empower you to be your best.
There was a time when mentoring was a big part of our world, both personally and professionally. It has gone by the wayside mostly due to our current business culture: competition, fear, and no time. HOWEVER, you can find your mentors in different ways:
* READING AND LISTENING TO AUTHORS & SPEAKERS
* VOLUNTEERING AND INTERNING (FOR FREE!)
* ATTENDING MOTIVATIONAL AND INSPIRATIONAL GROUPS – Just went to the Tony Robins group for Toronto, Goal Achievers, Toastmasters, T. Harv Ecker, etc.
* BEING OPEN TO PEOPLE YOU MEET EVERY DAY IN YOUR LIFE — MESSAGES COME FROM ALL SORTS OF PEOPLE
I am looking to bring back mentoring for our youth!
Keep you posted.
All my best,
Sandra
The Power of Gratitude
Posted Thursday, October 1st, 2009. Filed Under Voices of youth | Leave a Comment
I have talked about this before. I often hear the youth described as “entitled”, just wanting things now, not wanting to take the time to learn … In order to receive – money, gifts, things, love — you MUST be grateful for where you are at right now. The only thing you are entitled to is UNCONDITIONAL LOVE and it begins with you.
This is a nice video to remind you….
