Jeff Bezos’ Amazon and The New York Times article

Amazon has often been the company to look to for corporate culture development, employee engagement and what you should do to be successful.

Jeff Bezos is as much the corporate culture as the culture itself. As the leader he has defined the culture he wants to exist and has done what he likely feels is his best to foster that as Amazon has grown to its size today. I believe there are 150,000 employees employed at Amazon. I don’t have the article in front of me.

It was interesting when The New York Times released an article questioning the highly viewed engaged and highly motivated “work hard” Amazon corporate culture.

Mr. Bezos, responding to the article published about Amazon’s hard-hitting management style, deplored what he called its portrait of “a soulless, dystopian workplace where no fun is had and no laughter heard” and said, “I don’t think any company adopting the approach portrayed could survive, much less thrive, in today’s highly competitive tech hiring market.”

The article told of workers who suffered from cancer, miscarriages and other personal crises who said they had been evaluated unfairly or edged out rather than given time to recover in a company that could not slow down.

Did this behaviour occur? In such a large company it is possible. What was interesting about the NY Times article is that it interviewed may 100 people of 150,000 people. One concern is that the response is not representative of the majority. Yes, there is a few people who have endured such behaviour but the majority love working at Amazon.

What I found most moving and the action of a true leader is that Jeff Bezos took this seriously and sent a letter to all of the Amazon employees with his personal email asking for those who have endured this type of management behaviour to send him an email. He will have to decipher between a legitimate complaint and that of disgruntled employee. I have so much respect for this action. Other leaders and politicians should follow suit. Unlike Steve Bezos who truly cares, most people in leadership roles, do not.

Jeff, continue to be a role model hopefully your actions will inspire others.
I know you have inspired me.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. Read the article and Jeff Bezos response. We can always learn something.

All my love,

Sandra
