Not recommended: PSA prostate cancer testing

Thought you might be interested in this. Please pass this on to your husbands and boyfriends and brothers and fathers. Most men, if they live long enough, will get prostate cancer. As Dr Sunjay Gupta says on CNN, “many men will die with prostate cancer as opposed to dying from prostate cancer”. Routine testing for men is no longer recommended. The only cancer in which routine testing has proved to significantly save lives is colon cancer. Everyone over the age of 50 (or earlier if there is a significant family history of colon cancer) should be checked for colon cancer. When being checked for colon cancer and polyps are found then those can be removed and that greatly reduces the risk of colon cancer. They are now finding that there are some cancers which remain in a person’s body and are not a threat to health. The issue is we haven’t yet reached the place where our scientists can tell which of these cancers are likely to be innocent and which will cause major life threatening health problems. Thought it is important for us all to be informed in this regard.
